Dam Repair
Pond Dam Repair & Leaking Dam Fix
Is your pond dropping unexpectedly? Wet spots on the downstream face? We diagnose and repair leaking, eroding, and failing farm pond dams across Central Mississippi and the Delta.
If you see water actively flowing THROUGH your dam — call us immediately at (601) 896-2664. Active piping — water forcing its way through the embankment — is a dam failure emergency. A dam that is piping can fail within hours. Do not wait.
Stop the Leak.
Save the Dam.
Pond dam repair in Mississippi typically costs $2,000–$25,000+ depending on the cause and extent of failure. Geaux Pro Outdoors diagnoses the leak source first, then repairs correctly — whether that is a clay core trench, face reconstruction, riprap armoring, or muskrat damage patching. Free on-site assessment — call (601) 896-2664.
A leaking pond dam is not just an annoyance — it is a structural problem that will not fix itself. Left unaddressed, minor seepage becomes major erosion, and major erosion becomes catastrophic failure. When a Mississippi farm pond dam lets go, it drains years of fish stocking investment, destroys downstream property, and can take $40,000 or more to reconstruct from scratch. The right time to repair a leaking dam is the moment you notice the problem.
At Geaux Pro Outdoors, we do not guess at the repair — we diagnose the cause first. The fix for underseepage through an absent clay core is completely different from patching muskrat tunnels or re-grading an eroded downstream face. Getting the diagnosis right means the repair lasts. We have repaired leaking and failing dams across Rankin, Madison, Hinds, Yazoo, and Warren counties — and we bring that same professional approach to every job.

- Pond level drops faster than rainfall and evaporation explain
If your pond loses more than 1–2 inches per week in non-drought conditions, you likely have an active seepage problem rather than evaporation.
- Wet or boggy area on the downstream face or toe of the dam
Saturation on the downstream side — especially if it is getting worse — means water is moving through or under your embankment.
- Water seeping visibly through the base of the dam
Any visible seep on the downstream face is evidence of internal erosion beginning. This is urgent — call us.
- Sinkholes or depressions forming on the dam crest
Surface settlement on the crest often indicates voids forming underneath — from root channels, animal burrows, or internal erosion.
- Erosion channels cutting through the dam face
Rilling or gullying across the upstream or downstream face indicates your soil is unprotected and washing away with each rain.
- Vegetation dying in a linear pattern across the dam
A dead or yellow stripe of grass following a tree or stump root line is a warning sign that the decayed root is now an open seepage channel.
- Active water flowing through the dam (EMERGENCY — call immediately)
Piping is a dam failure emergency. Water flowing through an embankment is eroding a tunnel from the inside out. Time to full failure can be measured in hours.
How We Diagnose and Repair Leaking Dams
Every repair starts with understanding exactly why the dam is failing. A correct diagnosis means a repair that lasts — not a patch that fails again in two years.
- 1
Site Inspection & Failure Diagnosis
We walk the dam with you — checking the crest, both faces, the toe, and the spillway. We look for seep locations, soft spots, erosion patterns, animal sign, and vegetation clues. In most cases, we can identify the failure mode on-site and discuss the appropriate repair before any equipment is mobilized.
- 2
Lower the Pond to a Safe Working Level
Structural repairs require access to the dam face below the water line. We either use the existing spillway pipe to drain the pond partially or install a temporary pump-out. The pond does not have to be completely drained — just lowered enough to expose the repair zone safely.
- 3
Excavate the Damaged Area
We excavate the failed or failing section of the embankment — removing compromised fill, decayed root channels, animal tunnels, or eroded material down to competent soil. All loose, organic, or inadequate fill is removed from the repair area before new material is placed.
- 4
Install Clay Core Cutoff Trench (If Absent or Compromised)
The single most important element in a leak-proof dam is a clay core cutoff trench that keys into the underlying impermeable soil layer. Many older Mississippi farm ponds were built without one, or with an undersized core. When underseepage is the failure mode, we excavate a trench down to the clay layer and backfill it with high-plasticity clay in compacted lifts — permanently cutting off the seepage path.
- 5
Reconstruct the Embankment in Compacted Lifts
We rebuild the embankment in 6–8 inch compacted lifts using clay-rich material. Each lift is compacted before the next is placed. This produces a dense, stable embankment without voids or soft zones that future seepage could exploit.
- 6
Re-slope the Faces & Protect Against Erosion
We re-grade the upstream and downstream faces to proper slopes, install riprap on the upstream face if wave erosion was a factor, and seed or sod the embankment for vegetation establishment. A well-vegetated dam face is far more erosion-resistant than bare earth.
- 7
Spillway Inspection & Repair
We inspect the principal spillway pipe and emergency spillway as part of every dam repair. A failed pipe or undersized spillway is often a contributing factor in dam overtopping. We repair or replace pipes and resize emergency spillways where needed.
Common Pond Dam Repair Types
Minor Seepage — Face Treatment or Bentonite
Early-stage seepage through the upstream face can sometimes be arrested with bentonite clay blanket or slurry applied from the water side. This is the least invasive repair and works best when the leak is surface seepage rather than underseepage.
Clay Core Cutoff Trench
The most permanent fix for underseepage through the base of the dam. We excavate a trench from the dam crest down to the natural clay layer and fill it with compacted high-plasticity clay. This cuts the seepage path permanently and is the correct repair for dams originally built without a clay core.
Muskrat & Wildlife Damage Patching
Muskrat and crawfish burrows through dam embankments are a common problem in Mississippi. We probe and excavate all tunnels, fill them with compacted clay, and can install hardware cloth or other deterrents to reduce re-infestation.
Spillway Repair & Resizing
A broken or undersized principal spillway pipe is a serious safety issue. We repair or replace corrugated metal and concrete pipes, upgrade anti-seep collars, and resize emergency spillways to handle the design storm safely.
Full Dam Reconstruction
When a dam has failed completely or is so compromised that repair is not cost-effective, we reconstruct it from scratch — excavating the old embankment, installing a proper clay core, and rebuilding to spec with compacted lifts and proper slopes.

Common Questions
How much does pond dam repair cost in Mississippi?+
Pond dam repair in Mississippi typically costs $2,000–$8,000 for minor seepage corrections and $8,000–$25,000+ for major structural repair or partial reconstruction. The cost depends on the cause of failure, dam size, extent of damage, and whether a clay core cutoff trench must be installed. Geaux Pro Outdoors provides free on-site assessments — call (601) 896-2664.
Can a leaking pond dam be fixed without draining the pond?+
Minor seepage through the face of a dam can sometimes be addressed by applying bentonite clay from the water side. However, most structural repairs — including clay core trenches and dam face reconstruction — require lowering the pond to a safe working level. Geaux Pro Outdoors evaluates the repair approach based on a site inspection.
What causes pond dams to leak in Mississippi?+
The most common causes of pond dam leakage in Mississippi are: (1) absent or inadequate clay core cutoff trench beneath the dam allowing underseepage, (2) tree root channels through the dam that have decayed or been removed, (3) muskrat or crawfish tunnels through the dam embankment, (4) wave erosion undercutting the upstream face, and (5) improper original construction with local soil that lacked sufficient clay content.
How do I know if my pond dam is about to fail?+
Warning signs of imminent dam failure include: water actively flowing through or under the dam (piping), sinkholes or soft spots developing on the dam crest or downstream face, the downstream toe becoming boggy or wet after rains, and visible erosion channels cutting through the dam face. If you observe any of these, call immediately — a failing dam is an emergency.
